About Counselling

Counselling is a process where you can explore anything that is causing you worry, distress, discomfort or confusion and it is a place for you to be heard. Life can be very challenging and overwhelming and sometimes you need a space that is just for you, away from daily distractions and responsibilities, where you can share how you feel and what you think, in a safe and accepting environment.

People come to counselling for lots of different reasons; sometimes there is a specific issue to explore or we just feel so overwhelmed with lots of different feelings, that we need a place to unpack it all. Sometimes we simply need a private space to talk, and to be heard. We might look at what life is like on a day to day basis for you, and we might think about past experiences that help you make sense of your world. There is no 'right way' of embarking on this journey, it's whatever you need it to be. You know yourself better than you might think and are therefore your own expert! We often lose ourselves along life's path and I will endeavour to help you find you again, and realise and reclaim this great power that you have. I won't lead you anywhere you don't want to go, you are in control of your path and I am a willing companion.

I work with several different areas of hurt and confusion including depression, anxiety, trauma, eating disorders, gender identity, loss, anger, stress, loneliness, stuckness and self-esteem, to name just a few. I offer a supportive, confidential and private space to safely talk through your experiences.

Eating Disorders: My approach to working with eating disorders / disordered eating (which includes binge eating, bulimia and anorexia) is both compassionate and gently challenging, supporting you to understand the 'why' as well as the 'what'. Alongside the person centred approach we might use the principles of Radically Open Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (RO-DBT) to explore perfectionism, rigidity and rule driven ways of being, or we may use the framework of the addiction model to help make sense of your experiences. We will endeavour to find a way of working that feels right for you and I will always go at your pace, your autonomy and agency supported and maintained.

GSRD (Gender, Sexual and Relationship Diversity): I also have specialist training and several years experience working with gender identity, offering a safe space to explore gender incongruence and questioning. I am a proud ally of the LGBTQIA+ community and offer an inclusive and validating space to explore Queer experience.

Deciding to seek support can feel scary and finding the right counsellor for you is really important, so please feel free to get in touch with any queries, or make an appointment for a free of charge initial consultation (20mins) so that you can decide if I’m the right person for you to work with. This can enable us to meet, for you to be able to ask any questions you may have and for me to explain a little more about how I work and what I can offer. You may prefer to have this conversation over the phone, which is absolutely fine. There is no obligation to go ahead with therapy with me following this meeting/conversation, it's an opportunity for us to get a sense of one another and for you to choose whether we're a good fit; and this is always open to review.  You are in control of your path.
